Apple crumble pie
Easy Apple crumble pie recipe.
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook time: 30 to 40 minutes
Serves:
4 to 5 people
Ingredients:
For pastry dough
- All purpose flour- 1 cup
- Icing sugar-1/4 cup
- Butter,cubed and chilled-1/2 cup
- Ice cold water-2- 4 tsp
For pie filling
- Apple -peeled,cored and diced- 3 large
- Butter-1/4 cup
- Brown Sugar-1/3 cup
- Cinnamon powder-1/4 to 1/2 tsp
- Nutmeg powder-1/8 tsp
- Lemon zest-1/2 tsp
- Breadcrumbs-1/2 cup
For Crumble topping
- All purpose flour- 1/3 cup
- Brown sugar-1/4 cup
- Butter-1/4 cup
Instructions:
To Prepare the crust
In a large mixing bowl combine together all purpose flour,icing sugar and butter using a fork,until it resembles bread crumbs.
Add a tsp of water at a time until it comes together and you can form it into a ball.Wrap it using a plastic wrap and refrigerate until required.
To Prepare the filling
In a pan add diced apple,butter,brown sugar,cinnamon,nutmeg and lemon zest.Cook for few minutes or until the apples are half done.
Add bread crumbs and mix well until combined.Allow it to cool slightly.
To Prepare the crumble topping
In a mixing bowl,combine together all the ingredients for the crumble topping,using a fork,until it resembles breadcrumbs.

ReplyDeleteJust out of curiosity what element do the breadcrumbs bring? I've made many apple pies, but I don't think I've ever recalled breadcrumbs in it. Not opposed to trying it but was just wondering.

DeleteYeah!!The breadcrumbs just act as a thickening agent.Some variety apples need to have some of the juice cooked out of them,otherwise they will leave out excess moisture during baking.Most of the recipes call for thickening agents like,all purpose flour,cornstarch or tapioca flour.Breadcrumbs will thicken the liquid quickly as they have already been cooked.Therefore you just have to cook the filling (apple mixture) for few minutes.
Again the use of thickening agent is completely optional and depends upon,the variety of apple used and also how you like your pie filling to be,i.e a bit loose or thick and firm like the one above.
